Sky Rangers, J. Seeley, c.1970s–80s, serigraph, 30x22 in, signed, ed. 12/80.

Signed J. Seeley serigraph titled Sky Rangers, numbered 12/80. A dramatic black-and-white surreal composition featuring a retro-futurist airship looping through a star-filled sky above a stylized forest. Published within the Art Spectrum / Mitch Morse Gallery context, this limited edition merges cosmic narrative with graphic precision.

Artwork Description

Sky Rangers introduces a distinctly narrative and retro-futurist dimension to Seeley’s body of work. A streamlined airship, labeled “SKY RANGERS,” arcs across a dark, star-dotted sky, leaving behind a sweeping circular vapor trail. Below, a regimented forest of stylized trees stands in orderly formation, rendered in stark white silhouette against a black field.

The composition balances graphic simplicity with cinematic motion. The vapor trail forms a near-perfect loop, functioning both as visual anchor and symbolic orbit. The trees, evenly spaced and nearly diagrammatic, reinforce Seeley’s affinity for repetition and pattern — echoing Op Art’s structural logic.

The contrast between the regimented forest and the whimsical retro airship suggests tension between nature and imagination, order and exploration. The night sky, punctuated with minimal stars, expands the spatial field while maintaining disciplined graphic control.

Technically, the dense matte blacks, sharp contour edges, and tonal consistency indicate serigraph (screenprint) production. The edition is marked 12/80 lower left; signed in graphite lower right.

Medium: Serigraph (screenprint)
Sheet size: 30 x 22 inches
Edition: 12/80
Signature: J. Seeley (lower right)
Circa: 1970s–early 1980s

This work strengthens Seeley’s exploration of illusion, but here the rupture is replaced by orbit — movement rather than fracture.

Artist Biography

J. Seeley is a late 20th-century American graphic print artist associated with Art Spectrum, the publishing division of Mitch Morse Gallery, Inc., New York. Active during the height of the limited-edition print market in the 1970s and early 1980s, Seeley developed a distinctive monochromatic serigraph style combining surreal narrative, optical structure, and theatrical staging.

Distributed through Art Spectrum — under the direction of Mitch Morse (A.S.I.D., Design Affiliate; listed in Who’s Who in the East; guest lecturer in graphics at N.Y.U.; artist, dealer, publisher, fine art restorer, and art distributor) — Seeley’s works were produced within a professional print publishing context.

Recurring motifs include:

• Geometric or atmospheric ruptures
• Repetitive structural patterning
• Surreal figural fragments
• Optical contrast and negative space control
• Retro-futurist and metaphysical imagery

The consistent editioning and signature placement across the series reinforce its integrity within the Art Spectrum production circle.
