Celestial Breach (attributed), J. Seeley, c.1970s–80s, serigraph, 30x22 in, signed, ed. 39/80.

A dramatic black-and-white J. Seeley serigraph depicting a torn geometric plane revealing a star-filled cosmic sky with fragmented figure elements. Signed and numbered 39/80, this limited-edition Op-surrealist composition from the Art Spectrum / Mitch Morse Gallery circle merges illusionistic rupture with theatrical figuration.

Artwork Description

In Celestial Breach, Seeley transforms the flat picture plane into a ruptured membrane. A sharply angular tear opens within a softly rounded frame, exposing a star-dense night sky layered with clouds and luminous points of light. The cosmic interior contrasts against a grain-textured foreground, creating depth through tonal gradation rather than linear perspective.

Emerging from the breach are the now-recurring striped legs — a theatrical motif in Seeley’s work. One leg bends forward, the other extends backward, clad in bold horizontal stripes and high heels. The figure appears caught mid-transition, as though stepping through dimensions.

Unlike the heart-shaped rupture of the previous work, this breach is architectural — almost geometric — suggesting a portal rather than a wound. The cosmic interior introduces metaphysical scale: stars, glowing bursts, and layered clouds expand the psychological drama into the infinite.

Technically, the dense matte blacks and subtle tonal stippling confirm serigraph (screenprint) production. The edition is marked 39/80 lower left; signed in graphite lower right.

Medium: Serigraph (screenprint)
Sheet size: 30 x 22 inches
Edition: 39/80
Signature: J. Seeley (lower right)
Circa: 1970s–early 1980s

This work reinforces Seeley’s exploration of spatial illusion — not merely bending gravity, but puncturing reality.

Artist Biography

J. Seeley is a late 20th-century American graphic print artist associated with Art Spectrum, the publishing division of Mitch Morse Gallery, Inc., New York. Active during the height of the limited-edition print market in the 1970s and early 1980s, Seeley developed a cohesive body of monochromatic serigraphs combining Op Art precision with surreal narrative structure.

Distributed through Art Spectrum — under the direction of Mitch Morse (A.S.I.D., Design Affiliate; listed in Who’s Who in the East; guest lecturer in graphics at N.Y.U.; artist, dealer, publisher, and fine art restorer) — Seeley’s works reflect a professional publishing context emphasizing bold graphic clarity and interior-modernist appeal.

Recurring themes include:

• Torn or ruptured planes revealing alternate realities
• Striped legs as theatrical surreal motif
• Optical contrast and illusionistic staging
• Black-and-white tonal drama
• Psychological and spatial destabilization

Though comprehensive museum documentation remains limited, the edition structure, signature consistency, and publishing provenance firmly situate Seeley within the documented Art Spectrum production circle.
