“Lagoon with Ducks” (attributed) by Max Epstein (1932–2002), c.1980 serigraph, 32×23", signed & dated, Artist’s Proof (AP), bold modern color.

This vibrant Max Epstein serigraph captures a sunlit lagoon animated by ducks and rippling reflections. Hand-pulled, signed, and dated c.1980, this Artist’s Proof (AP) exemplifies Epstein’s mastery of color separation and modern landscape abstraction. A striking large-format work ideal for collectors of postwar and contemporary printmaking.

Artwork Description

This dynamic serigraph—attributed as “Lagoon with Ducks”—presents a radiant waterscape rendered through high-contrast color fields and rhythmic patterning. Golden yellows and ochres dominate the water’s surface, broken by turquoise, white, and deep blue reflections that create a pulsing sense of movement. Scattered ducks glide across the lagoon, their simplified forms anchoring the composition while reinforcing Epstein’s balance between representation and abstraction.

The work is executed as a hand-pulled serigraph, built from multiple screens that layer opaque inks into sharply defined shapes. Rather than modeling with tonal gradation, Epstein relies on color separation and graphic contour to convey light, depth, and reflection—an approach that aligns the piece with late-20th-century modern and pop-inflected landscape printmaking.

The sheet is signed “Max Epstein” in pencil and dated “1980” at the lower margin, and marked Artist’s Proof (AP) at lower left. Measuring 32 × 23 inches overall, the print has strong visual presence and is especially effective uniting decorative impact with formal rigor. Condition appears very good in the image area; the work is unframed, allowing for museum-quality presentation.

Artist Biography

Max Epstein (1932–2002) was a Canadian painter, illustrator, sculptor, and printmaker known for his bold graphic language and innovative use of screenprinting. Born on January 16, 1932, Epstein trained in Canada and France, including studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and later completed formal screenprinting training in Toronto.

Throughout a long and prolific career, Epstein worked fluidly across media—oil, acrylic, watercolor, drawing, sculpture, and printmaking—but achieved particular recognition for his serigraphs, where his command of color and form found its most distilled expression. His imagery often transforms observed landscapes into near-abstract compositions through flattened planes, rhythmic patterning, and saturated palettes.

Epstein exhibited widely in Toronto and New York, with numerous solo and group exhibitions from the late 1960s through the 1990s. His work entered prominent private, corporate, and institutional collections, and he received multiple fellowships and awards in both Canada and the United States. By the late 1970s and early 1980s, works such as this lagoon series reflect a mature confidence—technically precise, visually exuberant, and unmistakably his own.
