“Woman with Basket,” Jacques Schedler (Swiss, 1921–1988), c.1957, hand-drawn etching/lithograph, 13×19 in., signed & marked E.A. artist’s proof.

Woman with Basket” (1957) is a rare hand-drawn etching/lithograph by Swiss modernist Jacques Schedler, showcasing his expressive draftsmanship, Paris-trained technique, and powerful mid-century figurative style. Signed, dated, and marked E.A. (épreuve d’artiste), this artist’s proof reflects Schedler’s unique blend of structural modernism and gestural expression learned under masters Fernand Léger and Johnny Friedländer.

Artwork Description

Woman with Basket” is a striking example of postwar European modernist printmaking, executed in 1957 during Jacques Schedler’s formative Paris years. Rendered in dense black ink with vigorous gestures, the composition presents a strong, centered female figure lifting or carrying a woven basket on her head—a timeless motif associated with resilience, labor, and dignity across European and Mediterranean culture.

Schedler employs a hybrid technique of hand-drawn lithography and etched linework, evident in the crayon-like textures, blurred tonal passages, and crisp structural outlines. The work is printed on fine art paper and features the Tvoriginal Handdruck blind stamp, confirming high-quality manual printing. The lower right bears the artist’s graphite signature, “Schedler 57,” while the lower left is marked E.A., designating an artist’s proof outside the numbered edition.

The composition reflects Schedler’s stylistic lineage: Fernand Léger’s emphasis on monumental form, Friedländer’s painterly intaglio surfaces, and the broader École de Paris sensibility merging abstraction with humanistic figuration. The strength of the woman’s pose and the expressive immediacy of the line suggest an exploration of endurance and identity in the postwar era. The result is a powerful, emotionally resonant image characteristic of mid-century European expressionist printmaking.

Artist Biography

Jacques Schedler (Swiss, 1921–1988) was a painter, draftsman, and master printmaker born in Bürglen, Switzerland. He received his early artistic training at the Kunstgewerbeschule in St. Gallen, where he studied drawing, design, and graphic arts. Ambitious and eager to immerse himself in avant-garde circles, Schedler continued his studies in Paris, the intellectual center of postwar European art.

There, Schedler trained under two of the 20th century’s most influential artists:
Fernand Léger, whose bold geometric structuring and emphasis on the human figure helped shape Schedler’s composition and form.
Johnny Friedländer, a groundbreaking intaglio printmaker known for soft-ground etching and expressive aquatint, whose influence is visible in Schedler’s tactile mark-making and tonal depth.

He became part of the broader École de Paris, a community that bridged traditional academic foundations with modernist experimentation. Schedler produced etchings, lithographs, paintings, and mixed-media works, often exploring archetypal figures, emotional narratives, and the quiet heroism of everyday people.

Throughout his career, Schedler exhibited in Switzerland, France, and Germany. His works are held in European private collections and occasionally appear at German and Swiss auctions, where early Paris-period prints—especially artist’s proofs—are particularly valued. Schedler maintained studios between Switzerland and Paris until his death in 1988, leaving behind a significant body of expressive modernist graphic art.
