“Garden Music,” Susana Fabiani (Argentine, b. Buenos Aires), 1974, graphite on paper, 18 × 22 in., signed lower left and dated lower right.
A beautifully rendered original 1974 graphite drawing by Argentine artist Susana Fabiani, “Garden Music” depicts a serene pastoral moment where a young boy plays a recorder beside an older girl seated in tranquil contemplation. Fabiani’s celebrated mastery of pencil shading, Romantic figurative style, and theatrical compositional sensibility is fully present in this intimate scene framed by ornate garden gates and lush foliage. Acquired from the archived inventory of the retired Mitch Morse Gallery, NYC, this rare original drawing represents Fabiani at the height of her New York period and served as part of the masterwork series created for limited-edition lithographs.
ARTWORK DESCRIPTION
“Garden Music” is a tender and atmospheric graphite drawing that highlights Susana Fabiani’s nuanced approach to figurative realism. Two children occupy the foreground: one seated gracefully with an open book resting in her lap, the other playing a flute with gentle concentration. The scene is framed by a delicate iron garden gate, its curves and geometric ornamentation rendered with architectural precision. Lightly modeled hills, soft sky washes, and subtle plant life beyond the gate create depth and a dreamlike backdrop.
Fabiani’s pencil technique is exemplary—highly controlled hatching and cross-hatching allow her to model fabric, skin, stone, and foliage with sensitivity and restraint. The figures are serene, introspective, and positioned within a timeless pastoral setting, a recurring hallmark of her 1970s graphite works.
Signed “Fabiani” lower left and again “Fabiani ’74” lower right, the drawing dates definitively to 1974, aligning with the same period of production as “Contemplation” and “Boudoir.” These drawings were created as original masterworks for a series of limited-edition lithographs, making each piece extremely desirable to collectors of Latin American and figurative art.
