“Landscape – Lake,” Paul Balmer (b. 1965), c.1980s–90s serigraph on paper, 11×14 in, pencil-signed “Balmer” lower right, edition 169/350

Serigraph landscape est. 169/350 by Paul Balmer, South African-born contemporary artist; limited-edition screen print with warm autumnal palette, signed and numbered, ideal for collectors of modern prints and gallery display.

Artwork Description

This serigraph, titled “Landscape – Lake” (edition 169/350), is a finely drawn limited-edition screen print depicting a tranquil riverside scene with a rustic boathouse, wooden dock, and small boats gently floating on water. The composition marries delicate linear detail with evocative earthy hues, suggesting both realism and stylized interpretation. Executed on paper at approximately 11×14 inches and pencil-signed “Balmer” with its edition notation in graphite, the work reflects printmaking technique where screens and hand-pulled inks achieve layered texture and subtle tonal variation. The imagery evokes a peaceful natural setting—possibly inspired by rural waterways—capturing light, reflection, and atmosphere in a manner that harmonizes draftsmanship with serigraphic color layering. The edition size indicates it was produced for broad collector distribution while maintaining exclusivity.

Artist Biography (Paul Balmer)

Paul Balmer (born 1965, South Africa) is a contemporary painter and graphic artist known for evocative cityscapes, landscapes, and still lifes that blend representation with impressionistic and expressionistic sensibilities. Raised in South Africa, Balmer moved to Australia as a youth where he studied fine art at Meadowbank College in Sydney and graphic design at Randwick College, grounding his practice in drawing, composition, and visual design. After years working in illustration and advertising in Australia and the United States, he traveled and lived in Europe before relocating to New York City in 1999—a pivotal moment in his transition from commercial art to fine art. Balmer’s work draws on a wide range of influences from traditional landscape painting to tribal art, impressionism, and abstraction; he cites masters such as Cézanne, Bonnard, Kandinsky, and Klee for their color and compositional richness. His paintings often begin with layered surfaces that are scratched and sanded to reveal complex textures, while his prints capture atmospheric scenes with expressive linework and nuanced color. Balmer has exhibited widely in the U.S. and internationally, featured at galleries including Caldwell Snyder (San Francisco, Napa, Montecito), Etienne Gallery (Netherlands), Kobalt Gallery (Provincetown), and Campton Gallery (New York), and his work appears in private and corporate collections worldwide. He continues to live and work in the northeastern United States.
