DETAILED ARTWORK DESCRIPTION
Rex Fluty (American, 1934–2015)
Untitled Landscape with Two Barns – 24×20 in., Oil on Canvas
This 24×20-inch oil painting by Rex Fluty embodies the still, meditative quality that defines the artist’s rural American landscapes. Two simple barns sit quietly against a pale sky, separated by a graceful rise of golden-brown earth. The composition is minimal yet deeply atmospheric: a broad hillside spans the foreground, textured with delicate flecks of white and soft variations of ochre, sienna and umber. These tiny specks—signature elements in Fluty’s work—suggest stones, dried flowers, or winter remnants catching the light.
Bare, wind-swept trees outline the sky, enhancing the season’s late-autumn or early-winter feeling. Old fence posts, leaning at irregular angles, create a broken linear rhythm across the land, reinforcing the theme of rural decay and time passing. The barns’ muted wood siding and dark roofs anchor the composition with a quiet solidity.
As in all of Fluty’s landscapes, the absence of human figures heightens the emotional stillness, allowing the viewer to inhabit the moment. Signed “Rex Fluty” lower right.
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY — Rex Fluty (1934–2015)
Born: 1934, Arkansas
Died: 2015, Oklahoma
Movement: American Regionalism / Modern Tonalism
Primary Subjects: Barns, fields, winter trees, minimal rural architecture, American countryside
Rex Fluty was an American painter whose body of work focuses on the quiet beauty of the rural landscape. Born in Arkansas in 1934, he grew up amid farmlands, hills, barns, and open spaces that shaped his artistic eye from a young age. Although not formally academy-trained, Fluty cultivated his skills through regional art workshops, plein-air communities, and independent study.
By the 1960s–1990s he became known across the Midwest and South for his distinctive minimalist landscapes. His tonal fields—warm earth tones contrasted with pale skies—invoked a sense of memory, solitude, and seasonal change. Fluty’s barns and rural structures became his signature, representing both architectural form and emotional metaphor.
Exhibited primarily through regional galleries in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, and Texas, Fluty built a dedicated collector base. Today his works are held in numerous private American collections and increasingly appear in European acquisitions due to the rising popularity of American regionalist painting.
Hallmarks of his style include:
Soft gradients and atmospheric skies
Leaning fence posts and architectural silhouettes
Sparse tree lines
Warm, earthy palettes
Emphasis on emotional experience rather than detail
