Artist Biography
William Omurcada was born June 28, 1947, in Boston, Massachusetts. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard University in 1969. Following his undergraduate studies, he worked in the Surgical Research Department at Harvard Medical School, focusing on immunology, before transitioning fully into the arts. In 1971, Omurcada relocated to Washington, D.C., where he completed his first volume of poetry, The Tourist, reflecting his enduring integration of visual and literary expression. In 1972, he moved to Santa Barbara, California, studying art and literature under Robert Carty, Director of the Santa Barbara Art Institute, and became actively engaged in printmaking under the direction of David Maulhardt. He also studied with acclaimed printmaker Antonio Frasconi and pursued extensive experimentation with woodblock and relief printing. Influenced by his early years in New England and extensive travel throughout Europe and North Africa, Omurcada developed a refined sensitivity to landscape, structure, and atmosphere. Over the course of his career, he personally hand-pulled more than sixty editions of serigraphs, distributed nationally and internationally, earning recognition for their painterly surfaces, relief textures, and harmonious color blending within the American printmaking tradition of the 1970s and 1980s.
