"SGT. CHARLES E. WOOD, USA" -SAMSON POLLEN -Limited Edition Print -Signed & Numbered -AP 52/100
SAMSON POLLEN (1931-2018), a lifelong New Yorker, was perhaps best known as one of the most collected pulp fiction illustrators, including stories for Mario Puzo, Norman Mailer and Richard Wright. “I find his work has much in common with James Bama… It’s smooth, polished, the men handsome, virile and above all, capable in any situation.” Which is clearly evident in this piece. While Steve Holland was one of Pollen’s favorite man of action models, his wife Jacqueline infrequently modeled for her husband, but did on occasion stand in for a variety of unlikely characters, including male soldiers. His work has been featured in Artforum, Illustration, and Intelligent Collector.
“He [a writer] tell stories on paper with a pen, and I tell them with a brush, you know? We’re both doing the same thing in a different way.”
