Sheila, J. Seeley (b. 1946), c.1980, serigraph on Rives paper, 28x22 in, signed & marked PROOF, Op Art figure study
An original artist’s proof of Sheila by J. Seeley (b. 1946), a striking black-and-white Op Art–inspired serigraph measuring 28 x 22 inches. Hand-signed in pencil and marked “PROOF,” this bold high-contrast composition exemplifies Seeley’s celebrated exploration of pattern, perception, and the transformation of photography into graphic abstraction. Printed on fine art rag paper and published through Art Spectrum, this rare proof impression offers heightened collectibility beyond the standard numbered edition.
Artwork Description
Sheila is a commanding monochrome serigraph that distills figure, fabric, and optical vibration into a single graphic statement. The composition centers on a cropped female form framed within a rounded rectangular border. A polka-dot garment cascades outward in dramatic arcs, engulfing the pictorial field in dense black punctuated by rhythmic white circles.
The figure’s legs are rendered in stark white negative space, emerging from the swirling textile. A striped undergarment introduces a secondary linear rhythm that contrasts with the circular dot pattern, heightening the optical tension. The patterned fabric appears to pulse and fold, creating a sculptural illusion despite the flatness of the screenprinted surface.
Seeley’s mastery of high-contrast imagery is evident in the precision of the serigraphic line. The blacks are rich and velvety; the white fields remain crisp and luminous. The cropping and graphic clarity recall his background in photography, particularly his investigations into silhouette, perception, and abstraction.
This impression is marked “PROOF” in pencil lower left and signed J. Seeley lower right. Artist’s proofs were typically reserved for the artist, publisher, or select collectors and are generally produced in smaller quantities than the numbered edition, enhancing desirability.
Dimensions: 28 x 22 inches (sheet).
Medium: Serigraph on fine art rag paper.
Condition: No foxing; strong, clean margins; minor handling consistent with age.
Created circa 1980, Sheila reflects Seeley’s period of international exhibition and publication, when his work was featured in major photographic and design journals across Europe, Japan, and the United States.
Artist Biography
J. Seeley (born 1946) is an American photographer and graphic artist whose work bridges high-contrast photography, conceptual portraiture, and graphic abstraction. He received his B.S. from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1969 and his M.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1971, where he studied under Harry Callahan. In 1972, he began serving as University Assistant Professor of Art, establishing a parallel career as educator and exhibiting artist.
Seeley’s practice evolved from photographic experimentation into bold graphic reduction. Influenced by Callahan’s disciplined formalism and the conceptual photography movement of the late 1960s, Seeley pushed contrast to its limits, often transforming figures into stark silhouettes or pattern-driven abstractions. His transition into serigraphy allowed him to translate photographic intensity into flat, graphic form while preserving precision and tonal drama.
His solo and two-person exhibitions have been presented internationally, including venues in Scotland, Belgium, Greece, Canada, and throughout the United States. His work has appeared in respected institutions such as the Davison Art Center (Wesleyan University), University of Dundee, Michigan State University Kresge Art Center, and numerous university museums and galleries.
Seeley’s group exhibitions span significant venues including the Center for Contemporary Art (Beverly Hills), Eastman House, Art Directors Club of New York, and the National Print Biennial in Krakow, Poland. His works are held in public and corporate collections including Bowdoin College Museum of Art, the University of Iowa Museum of Art, the Cincinnati Museum of Art, University of California Riverside, University of Colorado Boulder, Time/Life Incorporated, and Mohawk Paper Company.
His images have been widely published in international journals such as Graphis (Switzerland), Zoom (France), Foto (Germany), Fotografia (Italy), Camera Arts Magazine (Japan), and the New York Times. He contributed to the book Darkroom Dynamics and received multiple Connecticut Commission on the Arts grants, along with First Prize in the National Nikon Competition (College Teachers Division) in 1977.
Seeley’s work stands at the intersection of photography, printmaking, and design during a pivotal period when visual culture was shifting toward conceptual minimalism and graphic clarity. His figures—often anonymous, cropped, and pattern-driven—reflect an investigation into identity and perception. In works like Sheila, the garment becomes architecture; the body becomes negative space; pattern becomes motion.
By translating photographic contrast into screenprinted form, Seeley aligned himself with contemporaneous Op Art and graphic modernism while maintaining conceptual roots in photographic inquiry. As scholarship increasingly reexamines cross-disciplinary artists of the late 20th century, Seeley’s oeuvre gains renewed relevance for its seamless merging of lens-based imagery and print design aesthetics.
As of 2026, Seeley’s limited edition serigraphs and proofs are appreciated by collectors of conceptual photography, Op Art–influenced graphics, and academically trained modernists of the late 20th century.
