Jack Herland (1919–2005)
Untitled White Chrysanthemum Trio — Impasto Acrylic on Paper
c. 1970s–1980s | Signed lower right “Herland”
Ex–Mitch Moore Gallery, NYC

This elegant impasto acrylic showcases a trio of stylized white chrysanthemums—one of the most expressive floral forms in Jack Herland’s botanical repertoire. Rendered in sculptural impasto, each bloom is built with layered white strokes that radiate outward like fine porcelain relief. The petals have a tactile presence, rising off the taupe-colored paper in delicate, feathery rhythms.

Herland pairs the white blossoms with cool gray stylized leaves, meticulously articulated with white contour lines that echo traditional Chinese brush technique. The stems and structural lines are kept intentionally minimal, allowing the flowers to float with lightness and clarity against the neutral ground.

This composition is notable for its vertical simplicity and modern botanical restraint, combining Eastern-inspired minimalism with mid-century decorative sensibilities. Unlike Herland’s vase compositions, this is a free-floating floral study, giving it a contemporary panel-like quality suitable for minimalist interiors, botanically themed installations, or collectors seeking refined, sculptural works on paper.

A quintessential example of Herland’s mastery of impasto florals, merging textural craft with lyrical design.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY — JACK HERLAND (1919–2005)

Jack Herland was born in Germany and immigrated to New York at the age of sixteen, where he immersed himself in the city’s vibrant artistic culture. He studied with:

  • John Groth — expressive drawing & gesture

  • Stuart Davis — American modernism & abstraction

  • Professor Wang Chi Yuan — Chinese brush painting & line philosophy

This rare combination of influences shaped Herland’s mature style, which blends Eastern calligraphic structure with Western compositional balance and mid-century decorative sensibility.

Herland served in the U.S. Army during World War II before establishing a career in both fine art and applied design. He taught painting in adult programs, developed hand-painted glass and porcelain, and worked as a consultant in the lamp industry. His floral and still-life works—particularly his sculptural impasto botanical series—became widely collected and distributed through the Mitch Moore Gallery in New York City.
