DETAILED ARTWORK DESCRIPTION

Jack Herland (1919–2005)
Untitled Floral in Tall Textured Vase — Impasto Acrylic on Paper
c. 1970s–1980s | Signed lower right “Herland”
Ex–Mitch Moore Gallery, NYC

This striking impasto acrylic by Jack Herland features a tall, cylindrical vase rendered in dense, stone-like texture—one of the hallmarks of Herland’s mid-century floral aesthetic. The vase rises from a series of soft concentric shadow rings, evoking water ripples or meditative brush strokes inspired by Chinese ink painting.

A lush bouquet of pale lavender-white blossoms crowns the composition, each bloom sculpted with raised impasto that gives the petals dimensional lift. Herland’s delicate, looping white linework generates airy stems and seed-pod motifs that extend outward in rhythmic arcs, creating a sense of expansion and movement. Small purple washes beneath the petals gently anchor the bouquet, adding atmospheric depth without compromising the overall lightness.

The taupe paper ground enhances the artwork’s serene palette, while the combination of sculptural paint, Eastern brush influence, and modernist form exemplifies Herland’s unique cross-disciplinary style.
This is a superb example of the artist’s decorative-modern floral technique—timeless, elegant, and highly collectible.
