“Sun, Fire, Leaves of a Dream,” a 1980 etching/aquatint by Sylvie Germain Covey (30×22 in.), signed and numbered 70/80 — a luminous botanical abstraction blending Eastern and Western printmaking traditions.

“Sun, Fire, Leaves of a Dream” (1980) by Sylvie Germain Covey is a masterful etching and aquatint print that melds botanical delicacy with dreamlike luminosity. Numbered 70/80, the 30 x 22-inch composition brings together fine linework, layered tone, and ethereal color — pale sunlit orange at the center transitioning to soft twilight blues and greys. Covey’s deep training in graphic arts (Paris), her printmaking work at the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop and at the Art Students League of New York, plus her study of Balinese art and Japanese Sumi-e technique, converge here in a piece that evokes mythology, nature, and meditative calm. A rare and expressive signed impression — ideal for collectors of international printmaking, botanical abstraction, and fine art etchings.

Artwork Description

“Sun, Fire, Leaves of a Dream” stands out as a richly layered etching and aquatint: delicate, fine lines suggest foliage, grasses, and branches, while broad tonal washes in glowing oranges and misty blues create a sense of light and atmosphere. A radiant orb — perhaps sun or fire — pulses at the top-center, its warm glow diffusing into the surrounding forms, giving the composition an almost spiritual or dreamlike presence.

Sylvie Germain Covey brings to this work a sophisticated synthesis of multiple traditions: her Paris training in graphic arts, her mastery of intaglio and aquatint techniques honed at the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop, her time as a monitor/teacher’s assistant at the Art Students League, and her exposure to Balinese and Japanese artistic philosophies. The result is an image that feels both rooted in earthly botanicals and lifted by transcendental light — quietly lyrical, soulful, and meditative.

Artist Biography — Sylvie Germain Covey

Sylvie Germain Covey is a French-born printmaker, graphic artist, and master printer whose international training and multicultural influences shape a unique visual voice. She studied graphic arts at the prestigious École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris (1973–1976).

After relocating to New York in 1977, she immersed herself in printmaking and graphic experimentation. She honed her craft at the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop in Manhattan — a historic studio central to the post-war American print revival.

At the same time, she studied photography under noted photographer Mark Feldstein while at Hunter College, where she later became monitor (teaching assistant) for printmaking and photo-etching.

In addition to her European training and New York print-studio work, Covey expanded her artistic vocabulary through travel and study abroad: she explored Balinese art in Indonesia and absorbed elements of Japanese Sumi-e painting, integrating those sensibilities — respect for negative space, subtle color modulation, meditative composition — into her prints.

Her formal education in the U.S. culminated in an MFA in Graphics, awarded Summa Cum Laude by CUNY Hunter College (1996). alexander-heath.com+1 Since 1980 she has maintained a print studio in Midtown Manhattan, producing a diverse body of work spanning etchings, photo-etchings, aquatints, and mixed-media prints.

Covey’s practice embodies international cross-cultural influences, technical mastery, and a poetic, nature-inflected sensibility — qualities that make her a distinctive presence in contemporary printmaking.
