Sunrise, Ed Valiunas (Canadian, b.1953), c.1970s serigraph, 18×23 in, pencil-signed, numbered 76/150, embossed seal.
Sunrise, Ed Valiunas (Canadian, b.1953), c.1970s serigraph, 18×23 in, pencil-signed, numbered 76/150, embossed seal.
A serene vintage serigraph by Ed Valiunas, Sunrise is a signed and numbered minimalist landscape from the 1970s, featuring layered mountain forms, calm water, and tonal atmospheric depth—an elegant collectible of Canadian modern printmaking.
Artwork Description
Sunrise is a refined minimalist landscape that distills nature into softly layered planes of color. A pale rising sun hovers above distant mountain silhouettes, while a tranquil body of water anchors the composition horizontally, creating balance and calm. Valiunas relies on restraint rather than detail—using overlapping shapes and carefully modulated earth tones to suggest distance, time of day, and mood.
Executed as a serigraph, the print demonstrates precise color registration and velvety flat fields characteristic of high-quality screenprinting from the period. The composition feels cinematic, as if capturing a single still frame at dawn. The work is pencil titled “Sunrise”, signed Valiunas in graphite, and numbered 76/150 beneath the image. An embossed publisher’s/printer’s seal appears within the image area, confirming professional edition production.
Artist Biography
Ed Valiunas is a Canadian artist born in Toronto in 1953, raised in an environment steeped in creativity, with both parents practicing as artists. From an early age, he demonstrated strong visual aptitude and consistently placed in photography competitions throughout his school years. His early artistic direction was shaped by formal studies in film and photography at both the Ontario College of Art and Humber College, providing him with a strong grounding in composition, tonal control, and visual sequencing.
Although academically trained in visual media, Valiunas is widely regarded as largely self-taught as a fine artist, developing his own aesthetic through experimentation and extensive travel. Exposure to varied landscapes and cultural environments contributed to his interest in “interpretive reality”—reducing complex natural forms into essential shapes and atmospheric layers.
Valiunas began producing serigraphs in the late 1970s, embracing the medium for its ability to deliver clean edges, controlled color fields, and subtle tonal layering. His work is often described as minimalist and meditative, with recurring themes of horizons, mountains, water, and transitional light—sunrise, dusk, and nocturne scenes. These qualities place his work in dialogue with mid-century modern design, photographic abstraction, and contemporary graphic art of the period.
He has exhibited in Canada, the United States, and France, including gallery presentations in Toronto and Paris, and his works are held in private collections internationally. While not aligned with a single movement, Valiunas’s prints are appreciated for their timeless calm, architectural structure, and understated emotional resonance.
