Artwork Description
“Treeline” is a serene, horizon-spanning serigraph showing silhouetted evergreen treetops before a distant lake and mountainous backdrop beneath a sunset sky. The composition’s calm yet structured landscape reflects Omurcada’s interest in environment and form, synthesizing influences of poetic sensibility and graphic precision.
Artist Biography
William Omurcada was born June 28, 1947, in Boston, Massachusetts and earned his B.A. from Harvard University in 1969. After a tenure in biomedical research at Harvard Medical School’s Surgical Research Department working in immunology, he shifted toward arts and letters, completing a volume of poetry titled The Tourist in 1971. Omurcada relocated to Santa Barbara, California in 1972 to study art and literature under Robert Carty at the Santa Barbara Art Institute, and further developed printmaking skills under the direction of David Maulhardt. He also studied with renowned printmaker Antonio Frasconi and experimented extensively with woodblock and relief printing, integrating these influences into his serigraphs. Throughout his career he personally hand-pulled more than 60 editions of serigraphs, which have been distributed nationally and internationally, noted for their painterly quality, relief texture, and harmonized colors. His work, grounded in both natural subjects and graphic abstraction, sits within the broader context of American printmaking of the 1970s–1980s, merging disciplined technique with poetic visual narratives.
