This 36×24 acrylic on paper by Hungarian-American painter Petzlic is a serene and atmospheric modernist landscape, acquired from the respected Mitch Moore Gallery in New York City. Soft tonal layers of gray, taupe, ivory, and ochre drift across the composition, capturing the luminous stillness of wide, open terrain.

DETAILED ARTWORK DESCRIPTION

Petzlic (Hungarian-American, mid-20th century)
Acrylic on Paper | 36 × 24 in. | Signed “Petzlic”
Acquired in New York City (Mitch Moore Gallery Inc.)

This 36×24 acrylic on paper is an atmospheric, abstracted landscape by Hungarian-American painter Petzlic, known for his luminous tonal vistas and fluid brushwork. The medium—acrylic on heavy art paper—allows for exceptionally smooth blending, soft transitions, and controlled glazing that Petzlic used to craft vast, mist-like environments.

The landscape unfolds in horizontal planes of taupe, dove gray, ivory, warm beige, and touches of muted green, creating an interplay of light and depth characteristic of the artist’s mature style. Sparse tree lines, dissolving ridges, and faint structural silhouettes emerge through the haze, capturing the emotional quietude and openness of the American Southwest—one of Petzlic’s great inspirations.

While abstract, the work retains an underlying natural structure achieved through precise but spontaneous strokes, a balance noted repeatedly in gallery literature about the artist. This piece likely dates from the 1960s–1980s, aligning with his period of active exhibition in both the U.S. and Europe.

The work remains in very good vintage condition and was never framed or displayed, preserved directly from the retired Mitch Moore Gallery Inc., NYC.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY — PETZLIC

(The biography remains the same—only the medium of the artwork changes—but it is included here for completeness.)

Hungary → United States (Post–WWII)
Art Students League, New York

Petzlic left Hungary after World War II, joining the wave of European artists rebuilding their careers in the United States. His early talent emerged at age twelve, and upon arriving in New York he enrolled at the Art Students League, where he trained under influential teachers who shaped post-war American modernism.

His work reflects a fusion of:

  • European tonal landscape traditions (typical of Hungarian plein-air schools),

  • American abstracted landscape movements,

  • And the vast atmospheric luminosity of the Southwestern United States, which profoundly influenced his palette and spatial sensibility.

Petzlic exhibited throughout:

  • United States

  • Hungary

  • Spain

  • Italy

  • Switzerland

His works entered numerous private collections, and he became known for landscapes that hover between abstraction and realism—quiet, expansive, and contemplative.
