“Silver Plains with Bridge” — 36×24 Acrylic on Paper by Petzlic | Hungarian-American Atmospheric Modernism
“Silver Plains with Bridge” — 36×24 Acrylic on Paper by Petzlic | Hungarian-American Atmospheric Modernism
This 36×24 acrylic-on-paper landscape by Hungarian-American artist Petzlic is a masterwork of tonal abstraction. Soft silver, taupe, mauve, and pearl-white layers drift across the horizon, evoking vast dreamlike plains. A faint bridge structure, distant silos, tree clusters, and shimmering reflections emerge gently through the haze, creating an immersive sense of space and tranquility.
Petzlic, trained at the Art Students League of New York, was celebrated for blending European tonal traditions with the expressive luminosity of American modernist landscapes. This signed original, preserved from the Mitch Moore Gallery in NYC, remains in excellent vintage condition and is ideal for collectors of abstract landscape, tonalism, and post-war émigré artists.
DETAILED ARTWORK DESCRIPTION
Petzlic (Hungarian–American, mid-20th century)
Untitled Atmospheric Landscape with Bridge and Silos
Acrylic on Paper | 36 × 24 in. | Signed “Petzlic”
Acquired from the retired Mitch Moore Gallery Inc., New York City
This 36×24 acrylic on paper composition is one of the most structurally complex and spatially layered works among your Petzlic pieces. Executed in his signature tonal abstraction, the painting unfolds across luminous horizontal bands of silver-gray, driftwood taupe, violet haze, soft rose-beige, muted olive, and pearly whites.
The composition features a deep interplay between abstraction and representational suggestion, including:
a faint arched bridge emerging from a gauzy mid-ground,
softened clusters of trees with autumnal undertones,
distant industrial or silo-like forms,
atmospheric reflections across water planes,
geological strata dissolving into pale mist.
Petzlic employs long, fluid brushstrokes—some soft-edged, others crisp—creating a landscape that hovers between the physical and the dreamlike. His manipulation of acrylic on paper allows for smooth glazes, feathered transitions, and the shimmering diffusion of light for which he is known.
This work, like the others from the same provenance, dates from the artist’s mature period (circa 1960s–1980s), when he produced atmospheric abstractions inspired simultaneously by:
European tonalism and post-war abstraction
The open, luminous spaces of the American Southwest
Romanticized memory landscapes of Central Europe
The painting retains excellent vintage condition and was never framed or displayed, preserved directly from the Mitch Moore Gallery inventory.
