“Yellow Landscape II,” Yigal Zemer (b.1942), 1972 embossed intaglio aquatint, 22×15 in., pencil signed, titled and numbered 45/50.

Yigal Zemer’s Yellow Landscape II (1972) is a rare embossed intaglio aquatint from his early architectural abstraction period, merging sculptural embossing with minimalist color. Signed, titled, and numbered 45/50, the work exemplifies Zemer’s internationally recognized mastery of inkless relief, precise geometry, and spatial harmony. A key piece for collectors of Israeli modernism, abstract printmaking, and 1970s geometric art.

Artwork Description

Yellow Landscape II distills landscape into its most essential structural elements: horizontal motion, spatial tension, and the architecture of light. Zemer constructs the composition using deep inkless embossing, producing a raised triangular form and geometric recesses that cast shifting shadows across the sheet.

Two horizontal bands of saturated yellow traverse the composition, functioning as both horizon and energy line. These subtle injections of color contrast with the stark white embossing, reinforcing Zemer’s architectural approach to printmaking.

Created in 1972, during his printmaking studies at the Pratt Graphic Center in New York City, the work demonstrates Zemer’s dual identity as architect and artist. It belongs to a small series of embossed landscapes in which the “landscape” becomes a field of spatial relationships rather than a literal scene.

Hand-signed, titled, dated, and editioned 45/50 in pencil, this piece embodies Zemer’s signature practice of sculptural printmaking: pure form, minimal intervention, and precision craftsmanship.
